5 Super Effective Home Remedies to Get Rid of Dandruff

It can be very embarrassing when you’re in public and you suddenly feel the urge to scratch your itchy scalp. If you give in to the itchiness, you most definitely will have tiny flakes dropping on your back. That’s what happens when you have dandruff and you don’t use any of these home remedies to get rid of dandruff.

Dandruff is a common hair problem. It is a scalp condition caused by fungus feeding on the sebum and dead skin cells on your scalp. It features scaly white dead skin flakes that appear on the scalp. Medically, it is known as seborrhoea and if severe, can really be embarrassing.

Causes of Dandruff

Dandruff is caused by any of the following:

  • Growth of a fungus called Malassezia
  • Sensitivity to hair products
  • Dry skin
  • Irregular use of shampoo
  • Not washing or brushing your hair regularly
  • Stress or any mental illness
  • Seborrheic dermatitis

Home Remedies to Get Rid of Dandruff

While there are many over-the-counter products to help cure the ailment, you can try any of these home remedies to get rid of dandruff on your scalp.

1. Coconut Oil

Shouldn’t this oil be called miracle oil already? It helps get rid of stretch marks, boosts hair growth, enhances skincare and as well cures dandruff. Coconut oil helps to keep your skin moist and prevents further dryness which may worsen the dandruff.

To cure dandruff, mix two tablespoons of heated coconut oil with lemon juice. Then apply on your scalp and massage it gently around your hair. Let it sit for 20 minutes before washing off with shampoo.

2. Orange Peel

Orange peels make up great home remedies to cure dandruff. To use, put your orange peel and some lemon juice into a blender then apply the resulting paste on your hair. Let it sit for 30 minutes before washing it off preferably with an anti-dandruff shampoo.

3. Egg Yolk

Egg yolk serve as conditioner for healthy hair. It also contains biotin which is good for treating dandruff. So when next you buy egg to eat, remember the yolk can always help you send off dandruff and save a raw one for a rainy day.

To use egg yolk as one of the home remedies to get rid of dandruff, apply it on a dry hair and scalp. Then wear a plastic bag over your hair for an hour. Afterwards, wash your hair twice to get rid of the odour of the egg yolk.

4. Garlic

Garlic contains anti-fungal properties capable of eliminating dandruff-causing microbes. To use, blend some garlic cloves with a tablespoon of honey. Then apply the paste on your scalp and let it dry for 15 minutes. When dry, wash your hair with a shampoo. To avoid reeking of garlic when you step out, do this at night just before retiring to bed.

5. Olive Oil

Olive oil serves several purposes, one of which is curing dandruff. To use olive oil as a natural remedy for dandruff, simply apply it on your hair and let it sit for ten minutes before washing it off with shampoo.

Use any of these home remedies to get rid of dandruff for at least three times a week up until you get your desired result. While doing so, endeavour to:

  • Buy and use an anti-dandruff shampoo in moderation.
  • Use your own hair comb and brush. Don’t share.
  • Wash your hair regularly to keep your scalp clean. It doesn’t have to be every day. Once or twice a week is fair enough.

This will not only help you get rid of dandruff but will also prevent further outbreak.
