What is Dry Hair?

When your hair is dry, it does not hold in moisture that makes it look healthy with a good texture. Rather, it looks brittle, dull and fragile. Most times, it leads to hair breakage.

What Causes Dry Hair?

There are a number of factors that cause damaged hair. And they include:

  • Heat styling
  • Over-exposure to the sun
  • Dry weather
  • Low humidity
  • Excessive washing of your hair
  • Using harsh hair products, etc.

How to Prevent Dry Hair

1. Avoid Washing Your Hair Every Day

Unless your scalp is oily, you shouldn’t wash your hair every day. Doing this strips your hair of its natural oil (sebum), making it turn brittle and dry. However, if you’re addicted to washing your hair every day, then use a shampoo that is suitable for dry hair. This way, it cleanses your hair mildy without getting rid of sebum.

2. Trim Your Hair

This may sound ironic but it is actually a remedy for dry hair and split ends. In fact, if you want to know how to prevent dry hair, you have to trim your hair especially when you notice hiccups.

You don’t have to do this yourself. Instead, visit your hairstylist and have your hair trimmed to get rid of split ends that may in turn result in damaged hair if care isn’t taken.

3. Limit Heat Styling

Another tip on how to prevent dry hair is to limit heat styling. It is no longer news what excessive heat styling does to your hair. Whether you do it to curl, blow dry or straighten your hair, it should be done at minimum. If you don’t know how to straighten your hair without damaging it, then don’t bother using a heat styling equipment on your hair.

However, if you don’t mind the consequence which is dry and damaged hair, go ahead and heat style as you like.

4. Use Natural Oils for Hair Growth

Natural Oils such as coconut oil, can help you maintain your hair to prevent and stop dry hair.  If the sun has damaged your hair, regular use of coconut oil will go deep into your hair fibres.

Furthermore, it also improves the appearance of your hair, giving it that healthy and welcoming look. To use, apply on your ends, edges and roots.

5. Use Cold Water

When the weather is cold, it may be difficult for you to bathe with cold water and this is understandable. But, you must also understand that regular use of hot weather poses damage to your skin and hair.

To be safe, use cold water to shower and wash your hair. Or better still, settle for lukewarm water. However, if you still use hot water to wash your hair, then endeavour to rinse your hair with cold water for a minute or two before stepping out of the shower. This way, you revive and refresh your scalp.

Writing has always been a part of me. From writing stories as a young child to studying Communication Arts in the university, it has always been more than a medium of expression to me.

And then one day, I found myself toeing the path of an entrepreneur and becoming a fashion enthusiast. This made me develop an interest in content marketing and copywriting which I've been chasing alongside my fashion career.

That aside, when I'm not sharing style articles, selling with stories, or creating fashion-forward pieces for Ria Kosher, you'll find me telling wild stories that always come with a twist.
