The MTV VMAs 2023 happened yesterday with a bang. The awards night had stars from the music industry bringing their A-game to the pink carpet at the Prudential Center, New Jersey on Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2023. The show which will be turning 40 next year, is inarguably one of the biggest music events of the year.
It was refreshing to see our favorite music stars in the game donning Versace, Oscar de la Renta, and other luxury fashion brands. It’s been a quiet year for Hollywood’s red carpets amid the ongoing actors’ and writers’ strikes, but the music industry was out in full force for this year’s Video Music Awards (VMAs).
The show was packed with performances from different stars such as Cardi B and Megan, who took the stage to perform their new single “Bongos”. Shakira, Nicki Minaj, and Demi Lovato also thrilled the crowd with their spectacular performances.
The night didn’t end without some stars winning big. Taylor Swift led the pack with a total of eight nominations, including Artiste of the Year, Video of the Year, and Song of the Year for her hit 2022 track “Anti-Hero.” She won all the categories where she was nominated.
Beyoncé, Doja, Karol G, Minaj, and Shakira joined Swift as Artiste of the Year nominees. This marked the first time since the nominees for the category since its inception in 2017 would be women. Shakira received the Video Vanguard Award. The night also welcomed a brand new category, Best Afrobeats, and Rema and Selena Gomez’s Calm Down took home the award for that category.
