Coi Leray braids aren’t strange braids. They’re just another name for jumbo knotless braids with curly ends. It traditionally features 16 medium-length knotless box braids (8 on each side) with bouncy curly ends and laid edges.
These braids became popular in the summer of 2021 after the American rapper Coi Leray released her hit song “No More Parties” which climbed the charts and went platinum.
People loved the song and the artiste behind it. She is one energetic, confident, and beautiful, artiste with a killer dress sense. Her adopting these braids as her signature style spiced up her looks to the extent that the braids became affiliated with her brand, hence the name Coi Leray braids.
Just like other braided hairstyles, Coi braids now have different creative spins. For instance, you can take yours beyond the usual 16 braids or give your curls a unique twist. The important thing is you wear these protective braids. Why? Its perks go beyond enhancing your beauty. These chunky curly braids are great for those with soft scalps as they cause less tension on your hair roots and protect your hair from damage.
What do I Need to Achieve Coi Leray Braids?
- Three to six packs of synthetic/human braiding hair. This can be unstretched or pre-stretched Xpression, Lush, Darling, Kankekalon braiding hair, etc.
- Shine ‘n’ jam.
- Mousse.
- Black rubber bands.
- A rat tail comb.
- Perm rods.
- Hot water.
- Edge control.
- A good hairstylist.
How to Install Coi Braids
First, you’ll section your already dry and moisturized stretched hair using a rat tail comb. The number of sections you’d have depends on how many braids you want to achieve. Afterward, apply the Shine n Jam to your parted sections. This will make them look neat and keep every strand of hair in place.
Since it’s a knotless hairstyle, you’ll have to first braid your natural hair before feeding in the extensions. After braiding the sectioned hair to your desired length, use the rubber bands to secure the ends. But leave some hair out at the ends that will be curled.
Repeat this process until you’re satisfied with the amount of braids on your head. Then wrap the left-out hair at your ends around the perm rods and dip them in hot water. Pat your hair dry with a towel and apply some mousse on your braids. Afterward, use your edge control to lay your edges and remove the perm rods from your hair.
